How many times does your heart beat per year?

Today we are investigating the following question. How many times does our heart beat in a year? We had to complete all our calculations using mental mathematical calculations. Could you work that out? We also thought about all the other factors that could influence this.

  1. Hi Year 3,
    Great work!!
Your comments are so well structured.
Yes, it was really hard to work out how many times our hearts beat in a year.
First we had to work out how many beats our heart beats in a minute.
Secondly you have to times the amount of beats your heart beats in a minute by 60.
Next we worked out how many beat our heart beats in a day.
Then we times it by 365 because that’s how many days are in a year.
It was a complex process, but in the end we came up with an answer.

  2. Hi Mrs M,
I really enjoyed finding out what my heartbeat was. It was really interesting to find out what other peoples was. Now that i think of it Mrs M didn’t find out what her heartbeat was. Hope to find out Mrs M’s soon.

  3. Wow! Year6 that seems pretty hard for Year3.
Lauren and I really want to know how many times our heart beats a minute?
It must of been quite hard to work out how many times your heart beats in a minute. When Lauren and I are in Year6 we probably would like to do it and might do it.
We wish we were in Year6 too!

  4. Hi Mrs Miller,
Its was really fun to see the difference between my heartbeat and others.
My result was 60 heartbeats a minute and Zoe’s was something like 102 a minute.

  5. Hi Mrs Miller,
I really enjoyed working out how many times my heart beat in a year. It was really interesting to see the difference between peoples answers. I never knew that different people’s hearts could beat at completely different rates.
    Zoe.
